S.L.A.M - (Spoken Word, Literacy and Music) project

In 2025, we worked with 12 young carers who are registed with North Tyneside Carers’ Centre to launch our S.L.A.M (Spoken Word, Literacy and Music) project. The young people were aged from 6 - 15 years old, and have caring responsibilities for a family member.

The sessions ran from the White Swan Centre in Killingworth and various locations within North Tyneside, with catering provided by Scott’s Catering, ensuring the young people enjoyed a hot nutritious meal.

The young people worked with a professional Spoken Word artist and music producer to create their very own pieces of art as well as a film which brings to life what it's like to be in their shoes.

Impact & Feedback

"The S.L.A.M project has provided a safe space for the young carers to talk about their caring role, discussing things I have not heard them discuss before. Creatively sharing their experiences has helped them relate to each other in a new way. Getting them involved in writing lyrics, playing instruments and creating their own songs has hugely empowered them and made them proud of themselves. Hearing their own words in their own voice has been a brilliant experience for them and myself."

- Michelle Henderson, Young Carers' Family Support Worker

Roisin and Steph were amazing with the kids and really helped them engage. The end result of making music will be a brilliant asset to help us promote and advocate for Young Carers when we are attending events and in schools. Liam really took time to understand each young person and the piece they wanted to create which meant the end result was fantastic. I can’t wait to see what they do next!

- Robyn Oliver, Young Carers’ Apprentice

“I feel proud because I made my own song and played the guitar forthe first time” - Portia, 9

"I feel more refreshed and joyful now" - Maisie 11

"It was fab, thank you a lot. I enjoyed everything" - Coby, 13

"I feel happy and excited" - Alex, 6
